How To Make Your Resume Stand Out

Many job seekers assume recruiters spend several minutes reviewing every resume. The reality is quite different.

When a recruiter is hiring for a role, they may receive dozens or even hundreds of applications. That means your resume often has only a short window to make a positive first impression.

Here are some of the things a recruiter/hiring manager immediately look for:

✅ Relevant experience for the position

✅ Clear and organized formatting

✅ Accomplishments, not just responsibilities

✅ Career progression and growth

✅ Keywords that align with the job requirements

On the other hand, these common issues can make it harder for a resume to stand out:

❌ Generic resumes sent to every job

❌ Long paragraphs that are difficult to scan

❌ Missing measurable achievements

❌ Outdated information or formatting

❌ Spelling and grammar mistakes

❌ Resumes that sound overly artificial or AI-generated

AI can be a great tool for improving grammar, formatting, and helping you organize your thoughts. However, I've noticed that some resumes become so polished and generic that they lose the candidate's authentic voice.

Recruiters/hiring managers want to understand your experience, your accomplishments, and the value you bring not read a document that sounds like it could belong to anyone.

One practical tip:

Before submitting your resume, read it out loud and ask yourself:

"Does this sound like me?"

If every bullet point sounds overly formal, full of buzzwords, or disconnected from your actual experience, take time to personalize it.

The best resumes combine professional presentation with authentic experiences and measurable results.
